5 Positive Montessori Phrases
Here are five parenting phrases to use with your children to communicate in a positive, effective way:

1. “I’m picking you up now.” Approach your child so that they can see you and let them know you are going to pick them up. This shows respect and lets them know what is about to happen.

2. “You may…” This phrase should be used to tell your child what you want them to do rather than what you do not want them to do. Telling them what you want them to do using the word “may” emphasizes their ability to make decisions while still being clear on what is acceptable.

3. “What do you think you could do?” Children often comes to us with problems and expect us to fix it for them. Instead of immediately jumping to the rescue, try asking what they think could be done to fix it. This helps them build problem-solving skills as well as independence.

4. “How would you like me to help?” If there is a problem that they simply cannot fix without your help, ask how your child would like you to help them. This helps them discern between which parts they can do and which parts they need help with.

5. “How did that make you feel?” This phrase not only helps your child understand their own feelings but it also helps them decide how they feel rather than your reaction influencing how they should feel.
